Singapore Pioneer Artists Exhibition

In the mid-twentieth century, a group of artists driven by creative passion journeyed south from China and began a distinct artistic exploration on this land in Singapore at a moment of colonial transition. More than forerunners in time, Chen Wen Hsi, Cheong Soo Pieng, Liu Kang, Chen Chong Swee and Sun Yee were also articulating new artistic possibilities. They brought with them a deep foundation in Chinese ink traditions, alongside an openness to new environments. Under the nourishment of the equatorial sun, they took their first steps toward integrating Eastern brushwork with Western artistic thought. Through dialogue with Chinese diaspora artists of different backgrounds such as Choo Keng Kwang and Lee Man Fong, a creative balance of harmony without uniformity emerged, forging a connection with this land. Kampongs, daily scenes, landscapes, and figures appeared in their works giving rise to the vibrant textures of Nanyang life.…
